A pilot project showcasing the importance of archaeology and heritage to health and wellbeing!
York Archaeology’s Nottingham Office has launched an exciting new pilot project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This initiative will offer hands-on heritage and archaeology sessions for residents across Nottingham City and County, aimed at enhancing health, wellbeing, and community engagement.
Running over three months in winter 2024/25, the project will include activities such as handling archaeological finds, illustrating and photographing artifacts, exploring local historic maps, and recording historic buildings. Participants will gain new skills, build social connections, and experience the mental health benefits of engaging with heritage.
This project is designed to assess the potential for a larger heritage and wellbeing programme in the region, following the success of York Archaeology’s “Archaeology on Prescription” initiative, which won “Community Project of the Year” at the 2022 National Museum and Heritage Awards.
Interested in hosting a session? Local health and wellbeing groups are encouraged to get in touch with Ian Milsted and Laura Parker for more information.
