Runes and a Viking longship on York Minster?  Colour & Light meets JORVIK Viking Festival!

JORVIK Viking Festival, 17-23 February 2025

Runes and a Viking boat join a host of historical animals in this year’s Colour & Light at York Minster, which runs 6pm to 9pm from 12 February to 2 March – making it a perfect addition to a visit to JORVIK Viking Festival this February half term!

Colour & Light is produced by The York BID, and sees the South Front of York Minster illuminated with projections and an emotive soundtrack.  This year’s display focuses on animals through York’s history – and, of course, the Viking era is well-represented, with Odin’s ravens, Hugin & Munin, as well as a bear, stag and a wolf all putting in an appearance during the 10 minute display.

“We’re expecting York to be teeming with Viking enthusiasts during JORVIK Viking Festival, and this is definitely worth a visit for anyone still in York during the evening,” comments head of marketing and communications, Lisa Wood.  “The Viking section of the show opens with runic symbols covering the South Front, followed by a longship and then traditional animals associated with Norse culture – a fantastic nod to the city’s Viking heritage, and a wonderful tribute during the Festival.”
