Snawsell Spring

Barley Hall has been running seasonal tours for nearly a year now. While I’ve always enjoyed history, I hadn’t had the chance to experience one—until recently. I finally joined a tour, and I’m happy to say it was thoroughly enjoyable.

A Bit of Background

Barley Hall is a medieval townhouse in the heart of York, just a stone’s throw from Stonegate and the York Minster. Once owned by the Priors of Nostell (monks based in Wakefield), it later became home to several former mayors of York—most notably William Snawsell, a medieval monier (coin maker).

The building disappeared from historical records for centuries, only to be rediscovered during renovation work in the 1980s. York Archaeology (then known as York Archaeological Trust) led the restoration, and the hall reopened in 1993 as a visitor attraction, allowing the public to step back into medieval York.

The Tour

Our guide, James, started the tour in the Steward’s Room, walking us through the living conditions and household hierarchy of a medieval home. What could have easily been a dry history lecture was instead lively and engaging—he got the kids involved and slipped in a few jokes for the adults too.

In the Great Hall, James gave a brief overview of the architecture and restoration process, but focused more on the people who would have lived there—and what they might have eaten.

Upstairs in the Parlour, we learned more about William Snawsell—his role as a monier, and what life might have been like growing up in his time. The tour wrapped up in the Lesser Chamber, where we heard more about Snawsell’s family—and how historians have pieced together their stories. James welcomed questions throughout and mentioned that every guide brings their own unique style to the tour.

James was always happy to answer questions and made a point of mentioning that every guide brings their own unique style to the tour.

Final Thoughts

If you get a chance to join one of the seasonal tours at Barley Hall, I highly recommend it. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for something different to do in York, it’s a great way to experience the past in a fun and accessible way.
